Who We Are

  • Founded more than 40 years ago by Congressman Henry Waxman, Congressman Howard Berman,  former Los Angeles City Controller Rick Tuttle and others, Los Angeles County Young Democrats is the largest organization in Southern California focused on giving young people a voice and a vehicle for activism in local, state, and federal political issues.
  • With more than 1,400 members and supporters, LACYD is one of the largest young professional clubs of any kind in Southern California, and as of 2012, LACYD is the largest Young Democratic Club in the State of California.

  • We are the most effective messengers to the most important voters for Democrats.
    • Election after election, exit polls demonstrate that when young people vote, Democrats win elections.  As the largest organization in Southern California focused on giving young people a voice and a vehicle for activism in local, state, and federal political issues, LACYD has the unique ability to reach out to young voters on a peer-to-peer basis.
  • We activate young voters
    • LACYD members actively engage in campaigns for our endorsed candidates by walking precincts making calls at phone banks, and sharing information about our candidates with their ever-expanding social networks of friends and colleagues.

Recent Success: LACYD in 2011

  • In 2011, we worked to get good Democrats elected to office and hosted “get out the vote” events for candidates for Los Angeles City Council, West Hollywood City Council, Congressional District 36 and the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees.
  • We helped spread the word about our endorsed candidates to networks of young professionals, featuring endorsed candidates in LACYD newsletter.
  • We collaborated with other Democratic clubs to raise money from young Democrats so we could reach out specifically to young Democrats
  • In a runoff between Scott Svonkin (LACYD’s endorsed candidate for the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees) and a tea-party Republican, LACYD worked with four other regional young Democratic clubs to raise money to support Svonkin’s campaign.  Not only were thousands of dollars raised, but that money was dedicated to young-voter outreach and paid for voter contacts with 15,000 permanent absentee voting young Democrats in Los Angeles County.  Not only did Svonkin defeat his tea-party opponent, but by activating young voters in an off-year special runoff election, we increased the chances that they would vote again in the future.
  • We have helped good Democrats running for office win campaigns.  LACYD-endorsed candidates in 2011 included:
